Four-legged cherry pickers!

It's kind of odd how little the human brain really picks up on when something is so commonplace. I've seen deer for as long as I can remember, but the other week during a lunch break I decided I ought to draw one since I never had. Lets just say I failed miserably! Who knew deer were so challenging? The cherry tree in our driveway produced a ton of fruit this year, so even with birds going at it there's been plenty they haven't touched. What's more, the cherries the birds drop have attracted deer to the base of the tree. I never saw a deer eat cherries before, but let me tell you, it's rather comedic watching their jaws working like crazy to eat the cherries. Sometimes they chew so much that the pit comes flying out of their mouth, but they leave poopy evidence behind that not all pits exit via the mouth...

Anyway, we had a small deer going at the dropped cherries just a bit ago, then an older deer came along to join in the feasting on dropped cherries. The cherry tree is unfortunately in one of my mom's flower beds, so when one of the deer decided to nibble on things other than cherries, my mom went out to chase her off. The older deer was only a few feet away, but she didn't budge. She did give my mom a rather concerned look though. I tried my best to capture it:

I'll have to do some deer study sketches soon, methinks. They are rather interesting in how they're built. Very unlike horses, which I've drawn forever, and their expressions are pretty interesting, too. One of these days I need to see if I can capture the look of a deer chomping on cherries...

Awww....Deer. I love how deers look. It's sad that they have the same brain power as a chiken --_-- They always get stuck in weird places here in Hull.

They suffer from prey mentality, quicker to flee than to stand their ground...which yeah, gets them into really weird situations sometimes. I was actually surprised the one deer I based the doodle on just sat there staring back at my mom instead of fleeing, but then some of the deer have become very bold. In a way I'm glad for it since they don't freak out when I drive my car. There was a deer one year that became so freaked out by my car being in the driveway that she kept running back in forth in front of my car. I wasn't even moving the car! -_-;

I never knew deer to eat cherries, to be honest. But I guess animals will go for whatever they find. I even disturbed a red fox eating cherries under the tree one year - before that I didn't even know we had fox in the area. O_o
